Three broad corrugated legs, finished in a deep gray anodized coating, give the Trio table its distinct identity. The legs create a visually striking effect with vertical washes of light and shadow. The aluminum structure of the table uses halving lap joints, a technique commonly found in woodwork but unexpected in metalwork. The visible seams of the joints have a sympathetic S-shaped gesture, adding to the table's overall aesthetic appeal.
The Trio table is not only visually appealing but also highly functional. The three legs provide solid and stable footing, making it suitable for outdoor use on uneven ground surfaces. The subtle corrugated section and crenelated top of the legs provide a reliable self-leveling support for the inset glass top. This feature also ensures three points of safe finger clearance, allowing for easy handling of the glass top.
The design and realization of the Trio table involved a meticulous process. It started with basic design-narrative sketches and 3D modeling, followed by full-scale handmade hard foam physical mock-ups and CNC milling of leg prototypes. The final aluminum prototype was fabricated using CNC milling and custom fixtures. The pieces were then sanded, blasted, anodized, and assembled with aerospace-grade epoxy. For production, the legs would be derived from an extruded aluminum section with secondary CNC milling for precise joinery surfaces.
Made of hard-anodized 6061 aluminum alloy, the Trio table features a 9.5 mm thick inset glass top. With a diameter of 1067 mm and a height of 356 mm, it is a versatile piece suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
The Trio table was completed in December 2013 in California, USA. It is a testament to Marc Scimé's dedication and creativity, overcoming various challenges throughout the design process. The table's unique design and craftsmanship earned it the Silver A' Design Award in 2016, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
